    The Soul vs. the Spirit

    Understanding the Nature of Man

What is the difference between the Soul and the Spirit?  How does a Biblical understanding of the nature of man differ from Psychology?

On this week’s episode, Jeff Christianson helps us understand the nature of man. Pastor Jeff helps us understand the basic meaning of psychology which is the study of or knowledge of the psyche. Most people have had a lot of psychological influence from the culture. Our culture regards highly educated psychological professionals with prestige. Freudian theories teach that inner struggles are based on things that happened to us in our past and that you can change by uncovering what is in the subconscious. The Bible on the other hand tells us that we need to renew our mind. “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2). In order for someone’s mind to be renewed they must first be born again and must immerse themselves in the Bible. When someone has a renewed mind they can begin to see things from a biblical perspective. Psychology vs. Biblical Counseling is not matter of preference, but of life and death, true vs. false, natural vs. divine. We must replace our way of thinking with Christ’s way of thinking.

In this podcast Pastor Jeff helps us understand the two prominent theological positions on the nature of man, the Dichotomist and Trichotomist views. Likely, Biblical Counselors tend to be Dichotomists because the integrationists are Trichotomists and they want to get away from that view. However, being a Trichotomist does not make you an Integrationist. “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of the soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 12:4). There is room for Biblical Counselors to have differing views on the nature of man, but there are important nuances to consider as well.
