191: Diversities of Gifts and Ministries

In today’s episode, we will discuss the following passages.

1 Corinthians 12:4-6
1 Corinthians 12:7-11
1 Corinthians 12:7,11

  • Ann-Louise Graham says:

Incredible to think that God has given every believer a gift by and through the Holy Spirit. God is the author and and the gifts are at his discretion. To edify the body of Christ in the context of the local church. What an amazing privileged. Good to reflect on the context of Biblical Counselling and how gifts can be used there, but also how to encourage others in their gifts.

    • Laura Dahne says:

It really is incredible to think that Holy Spirit chooses the best gift of the spirit for us! Think of how this can keep us from the deadly trap of comparison!

  • Anita Hammond says:

Great word Pastor Jeff. We are all gifted and I have seen extensive definitions on gifts that aren’t even listed. Head scratcher for sure. One thing, like you said, every gift is to glorify the Lord, share the Gospel, and edify the body. We are to use those for the kingdom. We unify with these gifts. I love helping people use their gifts. I finally figured mine out…yay me!

    • Ann-Louise Graham says:

Totally agree Anita its to glorify God….share the Gospel and edify the body. It is all off him and from him so the Lord alone gets the glory!

    • Laura Dahne says:

Anita, I also find it exciting to help people discover their spiritual gift. And isn’t it wonderful that we can assure them that if they are Born Again that they do indeed have a spiritual gift personally given to them by the Holy Spirit?!

  • Laura Dahne says:

Yes to Diversity AND Unity. I agree that jumping into the mix of serving is so good because we often don’t know what we’re gifted to do – until we actually get the chance to do it! However, my enjoying something doesn’t mean it’s a gift given to me by the Holy Spirit. Some teachers are teaching that don’t have the gift of teaching. The teacher may enjoy it but the students suffer. Counselors that are not equipped by the Holy Spirit may enjoy telling others their thoughts and opinions, but it’s possible there will be no life in their words.

I love that we can have spiritual fathers who we enjoy day by day, although they no longer are here in the world. Author Calvin Miller was that for me for many years.

As born-again believers, we need to trust and study the word of God, not our human experiences. Some people have made a mockery of the gifts of the Spirit and by them some have turned away from them, such as the speaking in tongues. I believe in the continuation of gifts of speaking in tongues, but I don’t believe that every person that does so is led by the Holy Spirit. This is why we need His discernment! The same with the gift of prophecy or a word of knowledge. While I am open to the fact that the Spirit still speaks, and that word must align with the word of God, I often find that a word of knowledge or prophecy is so generic that it could fit any person. I distrust those! After all, if the Holy Spirit wants to communicate a message, I believe He will share what no man knows except the man it is being spoken to. I can definitely see how this glorifies God.

Great podcast once again, Pastor Jeff!

    • Ann-Louise Graham says:

Hi Laura, I enjoyed that truth too – that there is diversity in unity. Because we are one in Spirit – praise God. “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all.” — Ephesians 4:4-6
